On November 23rd, 2023, a SF Airlines flight loading large-scale lithium-ion power battery packs weighing more than 35kg/pack manufactured by FinDreams Battery Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of BYD Group, departed from E Zhou Huahu Airport, Hubei Province, China and arrived safely at Frankfurt Airport in Germany in the early hours of November 24th, marking the first-ever air freight export of domestically manufactured large-scale lithium-ion power battery packs.
According to international standards, single lithium-ion battery pack weighing over 35kg requires special approval procedure A99 from the civil aviation authority of the country of origin. This approval process involves multiple steps, including lithium battery transportation safety testing, packaging safety testing, emergency drills, and approval of A99-related documents.
Safe Transportation Ensured by Expert Teamwork with Guaranteed Product Safety
The single lithium-ion battery pack being transported this time weighs approximately 300kg. To comply with aviation safety transportation requirements, FinDreams’ battery packs need to pass the heating test in fully charged state to verify the safety of the battery packs under extreme conditions.
In addition to the inherent safety measures of the product itself, FinDreams’ expert team has developed specialized explosion-proof boxes for aviation use to ensure absolute safety during transportation.
Moreover, a team of experts from the China Civil Aviation Dangerous Goods Transportation Management Center, Hubei Civil Aviation Safety Supervision Administration, Hubei International Logistics Airport Co., Ltd., and SF Airlines Ltd. witnessed the safety testing process of FinDreams’ lithium-ion battery packs.
Cross-Departmental Collaboration Supports FinDreams Battery in Successful Benchmark
Since the kick-off of this project, FinDreams Battery’s R&D centers in Shanghai and Shenzhen, as well as its office in Qinghai and various relevant functional departments, have efficiently collaborated to overcome obstacles and ensure that the safety performance of products and packaging meets aviation transportation requirements. The team have successfully completed several safety tests and passed the Class 1 packaging inspection, obtaining the A99 special approval letter.
With the strong support of the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) South Central Regional Administration, the Western Sea Customs, the China Civil Aviation Dangerous Goods Transportation Management Center, and the Hubei Civil Aviation Safety Supervision Administration, relevant units have worked closely together to efficiently complete the transportation tasks.
The successful completion of this aviation transportation task is an important milestone in the safe transportation of power batteries in China. It lays a solid foundation for the standardization and normalization of air transportation of power batteries and provides data support and successful cases for opening further efficient transportation channels for power batteries.
