1. Introduction to the development of energy storage batteries Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) is a lithium-ion battery cathode material with a regular olivine structure. The material was first disclosed by Japan’s NTT Corporation in 1996. In 1997, John.B.Goodenough and others from Texas State University in the United States obtained LiFePO4 with a regular olivine structure and reported the reversible migration and extraction of lithium from LiFePO4. Since then, lithium iron phosphate has received great attention from academia and industry, and has attracted extensive research and rapid development. After the ruling on the lithium iron phosphate patent in 2011, lithium iron phosphate batteries have risen rapidly in China. Lithium iron phosphate cells have been widely used in energy storage and new energy vehicles. As Tesla is switching its star energy storage product Megapack to lithium iron phosphate batteries in 2022, it marks that China has become the absolute leader in the lithium iron phosphate and energy storage industries. Later, as the market became more and more segmented and the requirements became higher and higher, power batteries and energy storage batteries began to differentiate. Power batteries pursue high power density and high energy density, and are not so demanding on cycle life. Usually, 3,000 to 4,000 times can meet market demand. Energy storage batteries are more tolerant of indicators such as charge and discharge rate and energy density, but pay more attention to cycle life. In order to achieve a service life of about 10 years, the cycle life is usually required to reach 6,000 to 10,000 times or more. For the difference between power batteries and energy storage batteries, please refer to “Energy Storage System-Introduction to Cells (III)”.
2. Introduction to the development of energy storage cell capacity 1. 280Ah becomes the mainstream of the first generation of energy storage cells. In 2020, CATL first launched a 280Ah large-cell energy storage cell with a cycle life of more than 6,000 times. In 2021, no more than three cell factories will be able to mass produce it. However, because of its large single-cell capacity and simple grouping, it is very suitable for large storage and industrial and commercial storage. Application scenarios, it has become the object of imitation for many cell companies, thus opening the 280Ah era of energy storage cells. It will gradually become the mainstream application of energy storage power stations in 2022. All of a sudden, various battery cell manufacturers have launched their own 280Ah batteries to grab market share. Of course, there are exceptions. Some battery cell manufacturers insist on the product line of soft-pack batteries or blade batteries, which are different from the homogeneous 280Ah batteries, and compete in the market with differentiation, such as BYD and Honeycomb Energy. 2. 314Ah becomes the first choice of the second generation industry. Since 2022, the mainstream battery cells used in the market are still dominated by 280Ah, but more than 20 categories of large-capacity battery cells exceeding 300Ah have appeared one after another: 305Ah, 306Ah, 314Ah, 315Ah, 320Ah, 325Ah, 375Ah, 560Ah, 580Ah… More than half of the battery cell manufacturers have 300Ah and above capacity batteries. Based on the “71173” size of 280 batteries, major manufacturers continue to explore the potential of battery cells and evolve energy storage batteries with different capacity specifications such as 300Ah, 305Ah, 310Ah, 314Ah, and 320Ah. Although most battery cell manufacturers continue to use the 71173 size in terms of size, they continue to increase the capacity of single cells while keeping the size unchanged, effectively reducing the cost of system energy storage integration (structural and electrical costs can be reduced by more than 5%). There are also manufacturers who insist on their own size, such as Guoxuan High-tech and Yiwei Lithium Energy.
In 2023, 300Ah+ large energy storage cells will officially kick off the “prelude” of large-scale application and become the product route that all battery manufacturers bet on.
