When BYD’s second-generation blade battery is launched, the market has been speculating, after all, blade batteries lead the development of car-gauge lithium iron phosphate batteries. The U7 will be equipped with a second-generation blade battery with a discharge ratio of more than 14C and a charge ratio of more than 5.5C.

In May this year, a message from Sina Auto Weibo showed that BYD’s second-generation blade battery ushered in a major breakthrough, “BYD’s second-generation blade battery system research and development has made significant progress, and will be officially released in August this year.”
Although it was not released in August 2024, the news at the time said that the energy density of BYD’s new generation of batteries will be increased to 190Wh/kg, which means that the range of pure electric models equipped with the battery is expected to exceed 1000km. “This is not only a huge breakthrough in existing technology, but also a profound impact on the future new energy vehicle market.”
The breakthrough direction of BYD’s second generation blade battery is estimated to be: on the basis of the first generation blade battery, through the unique concave pole design, further improve the volume group efficiency of the battery. This design moves the pole from the top to the side, taking full advantage of the height in the Z direction, while further increasing efficiency in the X and Y directions if the concave design is adopted. Such an innovative design makes it possible for lithium iron phosphate batteries to break through the 1,000 km driving range.
In March this year, there were media reports that at the “BYD 2023 financial report Investor Communication meeting” held on March 27, BYD Chairman Wang Chuanfu revealed that BYD is developing a second-generation blade battery system.
At that time, the news also said that BYD’s second-generation blade battery energy density reached 190Wh/kg, supporting the endurance of new energy vehicles exceeded 1000km.
For comparison, BYD’s blade battery launched in March 2020 had an energy density of only 140Wh/kg at the time. That is, the energy density of the second generation of blade batteries will increase by more than 35% compared to the first generation.
According to some analysis, the new electrolyte formula used by BYD’s second generation blade battery can effectively reduce the internal resistance of the battery and improve the low temperature discharge capacity of the battery: the discharge capacity of the second generation blade battery product is 80% at -30 ° C, which is 10 percentage points higher than the first generation of products, and higher than the three-way battery.
In terms of safety, the second generation of blade batteries will also be further upgraded on the basis of the first generation. According to some patents from the second half of last year to the beginning of the year, BYD has made a lot of optimization in the battery insulation, heat insulation, as well as integrated fire prevention, heat dissipation and other aspects.
