Recently, the official website of Samsung SDI announced that the company has signed a trilateral agreement with German high-end manufacturer BMW Group and American battery technology company SolidPower to jointly carry out a verification project for all-solid-state batteries.
According to the agreement, Samsung SDI will utilize the solid electrolyte developed by SolidPower to offer ASSB (All-Solid-state) batteries with enhanced energy density and safety. BMW will develop modules and battery packs for ASSB batteries. The three partners aim to evaluate the performance of ASSB batteries based on agreed parameters and requirements and integrate them into BMW’s next-generation assessment vehicles.
It is understood that in March 2023, Samsung SDI established a pilot production line for all-solid-state batteries at its Suwon Research and development center in South Korea. This is the first such production line in South Korea, and prototype production began at the end of 2023. We are currently collaborating with multiple clients to conduct sample tests.
Battery China has noted that on October 28th, Samsung SDI disclosed its third-quarter results. The company’s sales for the third quarter of 2025 were 3.518 trillion won, with an operating loss of 591.3 billion won. Among them, the sales of the company’s battery department were 2.82 trillion won, a decrease of 4.8% quarter-on-quarter and 23.2% year-on-year. According to statistics, the company’s battery department suffered an operating loss of 630.1 billion won. Due to the slowdown in the sales of electric vehicle batteries and the US tariff policy on ESS batteries, the quarter-on-quarter deficit expanded.

In addition, the sales of Samsung SDI’s electronic materials division in the third quarter were 231.8 billion won, an increase of 6.2% quarter-on-quarter but a decrease of 12.1% year-on-year. The operating profit was 38.8 billion won.
Samsung SDI said that in the third quarter, the company signed supply contracts of over 110GWh with multiple global vehicle Oems based on cylindrical 46 series and angular batteries.
In addition, in October, SPE, the US joint venture between Samsung SDI and Stellantis, began to launch a battery production line based on NCA and officially started mass production of ESS (Energy Storage System) batteries in the United States. The company plans to start the conversion to an LFP battery production line in the fourth quarter of next year and intends to expand the domestic ESS battery production capacity in the United States to 30GWh per year around the end of next year.
According to data from SNE Research, from January to August, the global battery pack installation volume reached 691.3GWh, increasing by 34.9% year-on-year. Among them, Samsung SDI was the only company in the top ten to experience negative growth, with an installation volume of 20GWh, a year-on-year decrease of 9.1%, and its market share dropped below 3%, from 4.3% in the same period last year to 2.9%. Ranked eighth.
