Mercedes-Benz BENZ-AMG launches new E-bike series, leading in intelligence
The Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One team has just announced a new line of innovative electric and road bikes that draw on technology from more than 75 years of experience in the motorsports industry.
Of the four bikes announced, the most notable model is the F1 Rallye Edition 750, according to Sports Illustrated. All models, including the rugged Rallye and Track e-bike versions and the street-focused Road and Urban versions, were developed in partnership with bike manufacturer n+.
The $7,500 high-performance Rallye e-bike features electronic gears that can shift in 0.2 seconds, an innovation that recalls the quick shifts of Formula 1 cars on the track.
It also has the ability to navigate steep terrain and shift under a heavy load, making it perfect for challenging rides, reports say.
That hefty price gets you more than just a bike, though. The F1 Rallye Edition also comes with a Bluetooth-connected helmet, as well as features like a light-sensing headlight, brake light, and thumb-operated turn signals.
It also has integrated crash detection, which can send text messages to designated contacts if the bike’s telemetry indicates something is wrong.
You might want to consider swapping your gas-guzzling e-bike for this more eco-friendly one, as it comes with a 720-watt-hour battery that can go 70 miles on a single charge. It’s also hot-swappable if you’re planning on taking longer off-grid trips. The Mercedes-AMG electric model may be more premium than your average e-bike, but sales have been growing steadily as people try two-wheeled electric vehicles before committing to a true electric car, according to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. “Most people’s first exposure to electric vehicles is an e-bike, not an electric car,” said Andrew Duvall, a transportation behavior analyst at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. “To support the adoption of e-bikes, we need policies that encourage more people to try e-bikes.”
E-bikes are a great alternative to gas-guzzling cars, with freight models emitting about 3 grams of carbon dioxide per mile, while SUVs emit 350 grams. Studies show that e-bike adoption is also having an impact on the oil industry, helping to reduce global demand and begin to reduce the 16.5 billion tons of fossil fuels mined each year.
The Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One team, based in Brackley, England, is no stranger to high-performance cars, but it has also been working to reduce its carbon footprint.
The Brackley plant runs on 100% renewable energy and has been awarded a three-star certification from the FIA’s environmental certification program. In addition, they have set a goal to reduce pollution by 20% year on year while offsetting any unavoidable CO2 emissions.
