According to the CGTN reporter group, during the 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29), BYD told CGTN that although some countries and regions have imposed high tariffs on electric vehicles imported from China, BYD will always adhere to the strategic goal of promoting innovation and development of new energy vehicles regardless of how the external environment changes. BYD also revealed that it plans to launch a new generation of blade batteries in 2025, continue to promote technological innovation, and bring more breakthroughs to the new energy vehicle industry in the future.
Of course, there is also a view that the official has not explicitly put forward the term “second-generation blade battery”, but in fact, BYD’s battery technology has been continuously iterated and improved in each new generation of models. For example, the “exclusive high-performance blade battery” equipped with the latest U7EV version is the pinnacle of BYD’s current mass production technology and represents its latest breakthrough in the battery field.
The most anticipated thing about BYD’s second-generation blade battery is the improvement in its energy density. It is understood that compared with the ternary lithium batteries currently used in the market, BYD’s second-generation blade battery is expected to increase the energy density to 190Wh/kg, which is close to the level of mass-produced lithium cobalt oxide batteries currently on the market. In the calculation of electric vehicle range, the increase in energy density means that the same volume of battery can store more electricity. Therefore, BYD models equipped with second-generation blade batteries will have a breakthrough in range performance.
According to BYD officials, most pure electric vehicles on the market currently have a range of 300-500 kilometers, and only a few high-range models use more expensive lithium iron phosphate batteries, resulting in higher prices. With the energy density of the second-generation blade battery increased to 190Wh/kg, BYD’s pure electric models are expected to achieve a significant increase in range, even exceeding 1,000 kilometers. This range performance is comparable to that of traditional fuel vehicles, enough to meet most of consumers’ daily driving needs.
