BYD’s energy storage business began in 2008, when the Electric Power Research Institute was established, which was responsible for the research and development, production, sales and service of new energy such as battery energy storage and microgrids; in 2009, BYD’s first energy storage power station was completed; in 2010, BYD’s first energy storage system product was successfully accepted.
According to data released by InfoLink, BYD’s global energy storage battery cell shipments ranked second in the world in 2023, second only to CATL.
In the first half of 2024, although BYD fell to fifth in the global energy storage battery cell and large storage market rankings, the gap with the second, third and fourth places was not large. In addition, in the ranking of energy storage system integrator shipments (DC side), “with good global operating capabilities, BYD’s domestic and foreign shipments grew evenly, ranking second in the world on the DC side.”
BYD’s outstanding performance in the global energy storage market has benefited from its “deep cultivation” in the international market.
BYD is gradually iterating its energy storage products. It has launched a series of products including MC Cub and CubT28 on the source-grid side, 20ft ESS designed for standard shipping containers, charging station battery systems Chess Pro and MC-I for industrial and commercial energy storage, and BATTERY-BOX for household scenarios, covering all scenarios.
On May 24, 2023, BYD released the MC Cube ESS blade cube energy storage system, which is BYD’s first energy storage system integrated with blade batteries. It has an ultra-large capacity of 6.432MWh and will be mass-produced immediately after its release.
BYD’s new generation of energy storage cube system MC Cube-T is launched. The system meets the new national standard GB/T 36276, adopts a new generation of super-safe energy storage dedicated long knife battery, the world’s first CTS technology, directly integrates the battery cell into the system, cluster-level reliable liquid cooling, high-voltage 1331V battery pack, standard outdoor battery cabinet, single battery cell energy is increased by 11% at most, single cube energy is increased by 11% at most, and single system energy is increased by 35.8% at most.
The system further implements the “magic cube” concept, with any combination of single cubes, any capacity of single system, compact design, small footprint, and the equivalent footprint of typical layout units is reduced by 24.7% at most.
