Scott Silence: Reinventing the commuter e-bik BYD 4680 3.2V 15Ah 46120 3.2V 24.5Ah AGV

Based on the successful e-gravel frame, the US bike manufacturer has created a commuter e-bike that aims to provide commuters with a light, naturally supported, and fast alternative means of transport. At €7,500, the bike isn’t cheap, but as VM “experienced” it, it’s very stylish and agile.

With the Silence eRide, US bike manufacturer Scott aims to redefine commuter bikes. Of course, this requires “bragging rights”. The recipe for success is simple, but challenging to execute. Based on Solace’s proven high-end gravel carbon fiber frame, the engineering team created a bike that, combined with the ultra-light TQ motor, weighs just 14.5 kg – comparable to some city bikes without the electric motor and battery. Small everyday obstacles, such as short stairs in the city or taking the elevator to the office, will not pose any obstacles, making “multimodal” commuting by train and bike a breeze.

Another advantage of its lightness (emphasized in marketing with the grace of a ballerina) is the very agile and safe riding experience it offers. Scott describes it as almost “weightless”, absolutely seamless and effortless. And it’s always fun to ride, too, thanks to the successful balance between frame stiffness and comfort on Munich’s not always smooth asphalt bike paths. Even without a suspension fork, the carbon frame handles manhole covers and curbs with ease.

Clean and beautiful, agile handling

The not-too-wide, specially designed handlebars with internally routed cables give the bike excellent agility, as does the compact seat position, which strikes a balance between upright and sporty. This positioning helps the rider maintain a clear view in chaotic traffic. The crisp, naturally electronic Rival 12-speed drivetrain supports the sporting intent with direct power transfer, although the belt drive and enclosed hubs may require less maintenance.

Visibility is enhanced by a powerful headlight and integrated taillight. Everyday practicality is ensured by a minimalist front luggage rack (although not particularly large in capacity), sturdy and lightweight mudguards and ergonomically comfortable grips. And of course, there are powerful and well-regulated disc brakes from the trusted SRAM Rival group. Other high-quality components come from Synchros, of course.

In addition, the 250-watt motor from German supplier TQ is very quiet and provides discreet but effective support, which can be fine-tuned as usual. This little device is a technological marvel on a bike: it offers a maximum weight-to-power ratio of 1.8 kg, 50 Nm, which is more than enough.

Coupled with a natural pedaling feel, riding through the city feels like riding a normal bike – only, thanks to the power assist, it’s easier to ride and longer distances can be covered. For suburban commuters, distances of 25 km or more are no longer a problem. Although according to regulations, the motor can only provide support at speeds of 25 km/h, the system’s low pedaling resistance allows the bike to cruise at speeds of 30 km/h. This is useful when one wants to ride very long distances. And it’s also practical: if you want to train in a more sporty way in the evening, you can switch off the power assist completely.

The integrated 360 Wh battery is cleverly embedded in the down tube and can be charged to 80% in two hours. For those with longer commutes, a 160 Wh range extender can be added, which is cleverly designed in the shape of a water bottle and uses Scott’s unique tool-free quick release system, replacing the bottle holder.

Using the app, the Silence can be connected to a smartphone. This makes it easy to adjust and control the bike. The preset motor tuning can be modified to extend battery life or maximize performance. For example, the motor response time can be extended or shortened for a customized riding feel. In addition, the display can be adjusted, or the control sounds can be turned on and off. For those who like or need it…

Manufacturer TQ pays attention to device connectivity and provides a minimalist display in the top tube. The LED display provides all important information at a glance, such as battery status (percentage), range (km) and mode. Thanks to the integrated power meter, cadence and wattage can also be read. For safe navigation, Silence also features a smartphone holder on the stem, which is compatible with the SP Connect phone case. The integrated ANT+ also allows connection to bike computers from brands such as Garmin, Hammerhead or Wahoo. This way, you can get around in a modern, flexible and comfortable way without having to drive. For the manufacturer Scott, Silence is also a symbol of a new mobility.
